Cardiff host the 2009 FIA World Rally Champions Rally GB
When the FIA World Rally Championship comes to town, the organisers usually set up a large open area and make the Rally Venue a temporary village. Not Cardiff!! They choose middle of the Town Centre as the Venue for the race. The start was held at the Oval Basin which is within 100m of the world famous Welsh Assembly Building with the pits and lorry parks also being situated within 500m. This was an incredible achievement and opened the event to many people who otherwise would not have been able to get involved. The race itself saw an amazing finale and in spite of having led from the out set, Sebastian Loeb and Daniel Elena only saw the rally swing decisively in their favour on the penultimate stage. The win gave Citroen Total WRT The Drivers World Champion which is added to the Manufactures’ Title which rounds off an extraordinary season for them.
Danco organised several structures and hope to provide more marquees for future years event. Matthew from Cardiff City Council said “We have crowned a world champion and brought the world’s sporting press and rally fans to Cardiff Bay for a mostly successful event….we were pushing you all on trying to make this event work in a space which is too small and with a very tight budget! It’s a Cardiff Event – what else would you expect from us? We like to make sure the impossible is achieved and with your assistance we once again succeeded!....Thanks once again for your help and support with this event”.
